Vallejo, California and Bagamoyo, Tanzania Celebrate Over 30 Years of Sister City Relationship and Renew Commitment to Sustainable Development

Vallejo, CA – [February 17, 2019] – Since 1993, the cities of Vallejo, California, and Bagamoyo, Tanzania, have shared a Sister City relationship rooted in cultural exchange and international cooperation. As the partnership marks its 30th anniversary, both cities are reaffirming their commitment to strengthening ties and advancing sustainable development initiatives in Bagamoyo through the Tanzania PEACE Zone Projects.

The Tanzania PEACE Zone Projects are focused on empowering local communities by addressing key needs such as clean water, sustainable agriculture, livestock programs, health and hygiene, and vocational training. This initiative aligns with Vallejo’s long-standing commitment to global engagement and community-driven solutions.

A Vision for Sustainable Development

The PEACE Zone initiative is a comprehensive development program that starts with providing access to clean water, followed by self-sustaining enterprises in agriculture, livestock, and vocational training. Each designated Peace Zone village will serve as a hub for community training and support. Key components include:

  • Water Access – Installing wells, pumps, and filtration systems to ensure clean drinking water.
  • Livestock Support – Partnering with global organizations to provide sustainable livestock management training and resources.
  • Agriculture Development – Implementing Grow Biointensive® and Permaculture techniques to improve food security and nutrition.
  • Health & Hygiene – Addressing malaria prevention, maternal health, and basic medical needs through clinics and educational outreach.
  • Vocational Training – Establishing sewing schools to empower women with skills that support economic independence.

Building a Better Future

The Sister City partnership has facilitated decades of knowledge exchange, volunteer engagement, and fundraising efforts to support these vital projects. As they look to the future, Vallejo and Bagamoyo continue working together to create long-term, sustainable change that uplifts communities and fosters international goodwill.

“We are proud to celebrate 30 years of friendship and collaboration with Bagamoyo,” said Pelton Stewart, Board Member, Vallejo Sister City Association. “This milestone reaffirms our dedication to improving lives through meaningful, community-driven initiatives.”

In Bagamoyo, local leaders echo the importance of this enduring relationship. “Our Sister City partnership has brought invaluable support and opportunities to our community,” said Bishop Nicodemus of Kigamboni. “We look forward to continuing our work together for years to come.”
