VALLEJO, Calif. — October 24, 2025 — Yajaira V. Rubio Machado, a beloved community leader, cultural educator, and entrepreneur, has been named one of the recipients of the 2025 John Garamendi Women of the Year Award, recognizing her outstanding contributions to culture, education, and community empowerment in Vallejo and beyond.
Machado is the founder and dance instructor of Ballet Folklorico Moon Azteca, an afterschool program established in 2015 that celebrates and preserves Mexican folklore through art, dance, music, and cultural traditions. What began as a small community effort to teach children about their heritage has since blossomed into a cornerstone of Vallejo’s cultural life, fostering pride and connection among local families.
In addition to her artistic leadership, Machado serves as a Vallejo Sister City Commissioner, where she helps strengthen international relationships and promote cultural exchange. Her work bridges communities through mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation — values that align closely with the spirit of the Garamendi Women of the Year honor.
Beyond her cultural initiatives, Machado is also the owner of Lunita’s Kitchen, a home-based business she professionally established in 2020. Specializing in gourmet food, pastries, and gift baskets for all occasions, Lunita’s Kitchen. True to her giving nature, Machado donates 25% of Lunita’s Kitchen profits to sustain Moon Azteca Dance and Art School, ensuring that young dancers can continue learning and celebrating their heritage regardless of financial means.
