Event Details
- Join Us In Cultivating Global Connections. Help us assemble new planter boxes and plant blooms representing our Sister and Friendship cities around the world. It’s a hands-on way to celebrate Vallejo’s global bonds, connect with neighbors, and beautify our community garden.
- What We’ll Be Doing. (1) Building and preparing two planter boxes. (2) Planting flowers native to each Sister or Friendship City. (3) Learning a bit about each city’s culture and floral heritage.
- Featured Cities and their Flowers.
- Bagamoyo TANZANIA | African Tulip Tree (Spathodea campanulata). While Tanzania doesn’t have an official national plant, this tree is common in coastal towns like Bagamoyo.
- Pram AFGHANISTAN | Tulip (Tulipa gesneriana). Afghanistan’s national flower is the tulip, symbolizing beauty and resilience.
- Trondheim NORWAY | Pyramidal Saxifrage (Saxifraga cotyledon). Chosen as Norway’s national flower for its ability to thrive in harsh conditions.
- Baguio City PHILIPPINES | Pine Tree (Pinus kesiya). Baguio City is known as the “City of Pines” due to its cool climate and pine forests.
- La Spezia ITALY | Olive Tree (Olea europaea). Italy’s symbolic plan is the olive tree, representing peace and prosperity.
- Akashi JAPAN | Cherry Blossom (Sakura-Prunus serrulata). Japan’s national flower, widely celebrated in Akashi and across the country.
- Jincheon SOUTH KOREA | Rose of Sharon (Mugunghwa – Hibiscus syriaucus). South Korea’s national flower, symbolizing endurance and beauty.
- Rota NORTH MARIANA ISLANDS | Leucaena (Leucaena leucocephala). Dominant tree species in Rota’s forests, through invasive, indigenous flora includes th eendangered Osmoxylon mariannesnse.
- Muju SOUTH KOREA | Rose of Sharon (Mugunghwa – Hibiscus syriaucus). South Korea’s national flower, symbolizing endurance and beauty.
- Ensenada MEXICO | Dahlia (Dahlia pinnata). Mexico’s national flower, native to the region and celebrated for its vibrant blooms.
- What to Bring. (1) Work gloves, (2) Small trowel or hand shovel, (3) Sun hat and sunscreen, (4) Reusable water bottle, and (5) Enthusiasm for gardening and global friendship
